Interactive Yeast Lab

Using Discovery learning, one of the most effective of all learning models (when done right!), learners can take responsibility for their own learning.

During this particular module, called "Bringing Up Baby", the environment is a hypothetical laboratory. Learners are invited simply to experiment with various factors that affect yeast growth (temperature, availability of food, concentration of salt, and yeast age) to grow a yeast colony whose growth chart matches the target growth.

The learner can repeat the experiment as many times as desired. Making mistakes in the process is just as useful and informative to the learner as a perfect outcome. In fact, the learner who makes only the correct attempt and nothing more will know far less than the learner who makes lots of errors. In Discovery learning, they are not considered errors - more a valuable activity in helping the learner understand the content.
